It was a different kind of party with a purpose in Aurora, Wednesday, Aug. 16.
Community volunteers gathered for a special school supplies packing party in preparation for Aurora’s largest and longest-running back-to-school bash this weekend.
More than 1,000 school supply kits were packed for elementary, middle, and high school students.
They will all be distributed at the 36th Martin Luther King Back-to-School Bash this Sunday, Aug. 20, in Aurora at MLK Park. This is the signature event founded by the late alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns, who died suddenly this summer after surgical complications.
The community is collaborating with the Mayor’s Office to hold the event in honor of Hart-Burns’ legacy as the City’s first Black elected to the City Council, where she served for 32 years.
A popular back-to-school tradition, the MLK Back to School Bash will have free school supplies, food, haircuts and hair braiding, children’s entertainment, raffles for adults, including rent/mortgage assistance, and prizes for children, including iPads and computers.
