Dear editor;

Some of the Democratic Party candidates for 2020 propose spending trillions of dollars to fight climate change. Most economists agree it is not necessary. What is needed is to put a price on carbon. Then, our free market system will achieve the necessary reduction in CO2 emissions.

The bipartisan Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 763) in the House of Representatives is the answer. It would impose an annually-increasing carbon fee at the fossil-fuel sources. It is not really a tax because all the revenues would be returned as equal-share dividends to all Americans. The dividends will help those with lower incomes deal with higher gas prices until they can afford to switch to the greener alternatives. New jobs will be created when consumers spend the dividends as they wish.

H.R. 763 is a bipartisan solution that will be effective without the spending of trillions of dollars and growing the government. We need to tell our representatives to support this bill. We need to tell the Democrats the spending of trillions of dollars is not going to get bipartisan support, and it’s not necessary, anyway. We need action now to curb even more extreme weather events in the future. We need to get both parties to support H.R. 763.
