Rachel Fliris shares insight about her mother’s 67-year struggle with polio at the Noon Rotary Club of Aurora meeting Monday at Two Brothers Roundhouse in Aurora. Jean Kosters was diagnosed with polio in 1949 at the age of 25. Luckily, five days prior to her diagnosis, her husband, Francis, purchased polio insurance for $10, the equivalent of $107.80 today after seeing a “Get Polio Insurance today!” sign. The family lived in the rural town of Sioux Center, Iowa. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years and numbers reported are far below 100.
