Major League Baseball questions to ponder while considering the competitive high school football season: Would Joe Maddon be the manager of the Chicago Cubs if the relief pitching had excelled? Will the Chicago White Sox continue to be confident with many good, young, players?
• Seven high school football teams in The Voice coverage area continue undefeated through five games, three in the Southwest Prairie Conference (SPC) West. Minooka, Oswego, Yorkville, have succeeded. The other four teams 5-0 all have been dominate: South Elgin in the Upstate Eight, Hinsdale Central and Glenbard West in the West Suburban Silver Division, and IC College Prep in the Metro Suburban Blue.
• Oswego will play at West Aurora, 2-3, Friday. “It was an old-school kind of a game,” Oswego head coach Brian Cooney said about Saturday’s 14-13 victory over Plainfield North in the SPC. Plainfield North scored with :36 remaining in regulation and failed in the two-point-conversion attempt to take victory.
• “We can’t let (Oswego) dominate field position,” said West Aurora head coach Nate Eimer.
• John Belskis of Minooka after a 24-7 victory over previously undefeated Oswego East: “We do not have a player offered a scholarship, like many of the teams we play. Our players have embraced their roles.”
• Naperville Central won the rivalry over North, 23-7, Saturday. “We stayed away from turnovers,” Central head coach Mike Stine said. “Neuqua Valley offense is dynamic,” he said on Friday’s opponent.
• “Our ability to stop the (Streamwood) run (led to the 19-6 victory),” East Aurora coach Nick Kukoc said.
