The Little Free Pantry at the Sugar Grove Public Library is asking for donations as part of their “Have a Heart” Valentine’s Day food drive.
“We have noticed a significant increase in usage as patrons may be experiencing financial challenges if they work seasonally, work slowdowns after holidays, extra bills, and reductions to local resources for food security,” said Shannon Halikias, library director.
The supply at the pantry has slowed down after holiday donations, while the need is ongoing. The Little Free Pantry is located in the internal foyer by the bookdrop, and available 24 hours a day. The pantry is a stopgap resource for emergency need, or until patrons may utilize the local Between Friends Food Pantry.
The pantry is available 24 hour a day, seven days a week so that patrons may access it with dignity and privacy. The theme of the pantry is always to take what you need, leave what you can.
Items that are most needed are canned vegetables, pastas, rice, soups, bread mixes, and other non-perishables. The Library asks that people carefully check expiration dates and consider donating things that help stretch meals or may be utilized by families. To date there have been no abuses of the pantry, and the Library credits generous donations from the community which make the resource possible. The Library will post pictures on social media of the food donations, and welcomes partnerships.
