To celebrate both Women’s History Month and the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, the Aurora Public Library (APL) will have a Woman Up! Party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, March 6 in the Santori Library Atrium. The event will feature the League of Women Voters Aurora Area opening reception of Rightfully Hers: The Right to Vote exhibit, an interactive visual display commemorating suffrage and the fight to secure equal voting rights for all genders. Representatives from the League of Women Voters Aurora Area will attend to chat about the exhibit and its significance today.
What better way to kick off Women’s History Month and the Rightfully Hers exhibit than with an all-female horn ensemble, Alloy Horn Quartet? With some members hailing from the surrounding suburbs and all from the Midwest, this dynamic chamber group is a nationally recognized music powerhouse whose more local appearances include the Chicago Brass Festival and the Winter Horn Fest at Northern Illinois University. Members include Liz Deitemyer of Lemont, Anna Jacobson of Elk Mound, Wis., Kelly Langenberg from New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Dana Sherman of Naperville. The quartet will perform from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with a few breaks interspersed to rest the chops.
In our celebration of women, suffrage, and the democratic power of voting, we take this opportunity to welcome the first whisperings of springtime, which officially will arrive Thursday, March 19. The Kane County Audubon Society will share its Birds of Illinois photo exhibit with visitors of Santori Library starting March 1, and there will be an exclusive opportunity to view the exhibit in March’s First Fridays. Created by community naturalists and birding enthusiasts, the exhibit will feature photos of native birds and wildlife you might encounter when you return to the parks and trails around Aurora. This exhibit will be available for viewing at Santori Library through March. As a chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, the Kane County Audubon Society was founded in 1966 and boasts more than 200 members whose passion and love of nature bring them together for monthly meet-ups, events, and nature tours that explore both birds and the natural environments in which they live and thrive.
The Library welcomes visitors of all ages to the First Fridays event, and will include crafty activities that promote both women’s suffrage and the local birding community.
With something for the whole family, from the elite and exclusive sounds of Alloy Horn Quartet to visiting with the League of Women Voters and Birds of Illinois, how can you go wrong?
For continued fun, mark your calendars when Bob Andrini, former president of the Kane County Audubon Society and curator of the Birds of Illinois exhibit, will present “Amazing Birds” at the Santori Library in conjunction with the photos from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. March 14. This program will be informative for guests of all ages interested in learning more about the birds you see in the exhibit, and may be even living in your own backyard! No registration is required for this family-friendly program.
