The Sugar Grove Public Library has canceled all public programs, meetings, and events through March 31 in response to the recent public health recommendations in regards to the COVID-19 (coronavirus). It includes consultation and information evaluation from the Village government of Sugar Grove, Kane County resources, Center for Disease Control, and the declaration of a global pandemic from the World Health Organization. We are carefully consulting responses from other libraries across the State and are in alignment with the consensus for prudence. Information is being posted on the Village of Sugar Grove website located at: www.sugargroveil.gov/coronavirus-information.
There has not been a documented case of COVID-19 among the staff members of the Library, and we have not received notification from a patron that there has been exposure. These safety measures are in accordance to prevent the spread in a rapidly evolving environment. Utilizing common sense and limiting exposure in social gatherings is recommended.
Health experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, have advocated for social distancing, isolating individuals, and canceling gatherings, as the best solution to avoid the rapid spread of this infectious disease. Slowing the rate of infection will help “flatten the curve” of new COVID-19 cases and keep the health-care system from becoming overwhelmed. The variety of vulnerable populations that visit the Library are a concern as the infection is stated to be airborne, and may live on surfaces up to three days.
All patrons registered for the affected programming are being notified. This includes storytimes and children’s activities, meeting room rentals (refunds will be issued), non-profit gatherings, Wintermarket, etc. The Library staff member will craft virtual storytimes and book discussion that can be utilized through YouTube or Facebook Live. Other creative measures to serve will be formulated.
The Library will be open to the public, though essential measures are being taken in the facility, including sanitizing areas with appropriate CDC recommended products, encouraging the public to use our 24/7 catalog and placing holds that can be picked up in the drive through window, guiding patrons through database and downloadable resources. Should the situation deepen, the Library may reevaluate this plan. Pandemic procedures are currently being written and evaluated in order to maintain operational safety and security.
You are welcome to call the Library for more information at 630-466-4686 or send to shannon@sgpl.org with concerns or comments.
