Tyler Nubin became the latest western suburban football player to commit to Minnesota head football coach, P.J. Fleck.
Nubin, a three-star junior cornerback at St. Charles North High School, became the fifth player from the Class of 2019 to commit to Fleck, a former star wide receiver at Kaneland High School and Northern Illinois University. Fleck completed his first year as the head coach at Minnesota last year. The Golden Gophers finished with an overall record of 5-7, 2-7 in the Big Ten Conference.
Fleck, a Sugar Grove native, has made recruiting in Illinois a key point of emphasis to help build the Gophers into an annual contender in the Big Ten Conference. Fleck was head coach four seasons at Western Michigan University, 2013-2016.
Nubin, the No. 38 ranked cornerback nationally in the 247Sports.com composite, chose Minnesota over offers from Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Iowa, and Purdue from the Big Ten, along with Kentucky and Tennessee.
“Tyler really liked Minnesota and the coaching staff, and we’re really excited about his future,” St. Charles North head coach Rob Pomazak said. “His goal was always to play Division I.”
The 6-2 and 180-pound Nubin, the fifth-rated prospect in the State for his class, collected 26 tackles and two interceptions last season for the North Stars.
“I’m glad to finally have found a home, so I can just focus on getting this team (St. Charles North) better,” Nubin said.
“This is a really hungry group. I think this class is really special. We’ve been talking about doing something great since our freshman year and I think this is going to be the right class to do it.”
St. Charles North last season won the Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship and finished with a 9-2 overall record. The North Stars will be in a newly-created conference next season. The DuKane Conference will be composed of St. Charles North, St. Charles East, Batavia, Geneva, Wheaton Warrenville South, Wheaton North, Glenbard North, and Lake Park.
