Sports are at once lasting and fleeting.

Lasting: We savor high-level sports memories: Top players, special championships, stellar performances. We have seen more than a few of our former sports stars die in recent months. Too many to enumerate. Start with Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears, Lou Brock of the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees, 13 days short of 92 years old. There have been many more to pass.

Fleeting: Personnel changes in coaching leadership. Head coach Billy Donovan of the Chicago Bulls is in and Rick Renteria of the White Sox is out.

Fleeting: High school Fall sports are abbreviated. Golf tournaments, boys and girls, regional and sectional tournaments, however, because of the COVID-19 there are no State tournaments. Glenbard West and Kaneland won boys golf sectional championships, however make no advancements to a State meet. Hinsdale Central won a girls golf sectional championship with nowhere to go. Girls tennis sectional meets Saturday will end the season. Boys and girls cross country regional and sectional tournaments will take place in the last two Saturdays this month…and it’s over.

These are interesting times, lasting and fleeting.

We have learned to take nothing for granted. Truly Enjoy one day at a time. Our world is fleeting and we savor it to caress with a touch of lasting.
