In partnership with other libraries, Aurora Public Library District (APLD) will be host to Dr. Eve L. Ewing live on Zoom at 6 p.m. Monday, March 1, to discuss her latest book of poems, “1919,” in celebration of World Social Justice Day.
Ewing is an educational sociologist whose research focuses on segregation, socioeconomic injustice, and urban politics and their effect on American public schools and young people’s lives. An assistant professor at the University of Chicago, Dr. Ewing most recently wrote “1919,” as well as her nonfiction book “Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Closings of Segregation and School on the South Side of Chicago.” Her first book, the “Electric Arches” poetry collection, won awards from the American Library Association and the Poetry Society of America and was named by NPR and The Chicago Tribune as one of the best books of the year. Kokila Books will publish her first book for young readers, “Maya and The Robot”, in Summer 2021.
Dr. Ewing’s work has been published in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, and many other publishing companies. She is writing her next book, “Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism,” which will be published by One World.
Reporter and author, Natalie Moore, will moderate this discussion. Moore explores segregation and racism for Chicago’s WBEZ and her flagship work has covered race, employment, economic prosperity, food injustice, and crime. Moore’s work has been broadcast on “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered” and “Weekend Edition”.
February is Black History Month, and APLD wants to bring events to the public which help highlight the need and drive for equity, inclusion and diversity, in Aurora along with our partner libraries: Addison Public Library District, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Cook Memorial Public Library District in Lake County, Gail Borden Public Library District in Elgin, Glenview Public Library, Highland Park Public Library, Lake Villa Public Library, Oak Park Public Library, Skokie Public Library, Schaumburg Township District Library, and Wilmette Public Library.
