The West Aurora Cemetery, 543 Wilder Street, will be host to an historic Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 30. Please note that this ceremony will be Sunday, not Memorial Day Monday. The program will be presented by the Philip H Sheridan Camp #2, Illinois Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Michael Zafran, commanding officer.
More than 160 Civil War veterans are buried in the Cemetery. They include Albert Williams, an escaped slave and a member of what was originally called the Colored Infantry. Several other African American Civil War veterans are buried at the cemetery. The West Aurora Cemetery was established in 1834 and is Aurora’s oldest cemetery. It is the resting place of many of Aurora’s founders.
We welcome visitors. Please bring folding chairs. More information about the Cemetery can be found on Facebook, “Friends of West Aurora Cemetery.”
