Memorial Day scene varied, including virus impact

Memorial Day observances fill our communities. The following list has varied activities. All are designed to properly pay respects to the military members who died in action and once served and have passed. All of the observances will be Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, unless otherwise noted:

DuPage County

• Elmhurst: The annual parade is canceled.

• Lisle: Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony and Silent Convoy, Monday, May 31.

The Remembrance Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Lisle Veteran’s Memorial at the corner of Center and School Streets. It will be live-streamed.

Lisle will observe Memorial Day with a silent convoy of vehicles at noon with representatives from the Village of Lisle, Lisle-Woodridge Fire District, and the Lisle VFW Ross Bishop Post 5696. All participants will remain in their vehicles throughout the duration of the event. The 2021 Memorial Day grand marshal will be U.S. Navy veteran, 2nd Class Petty Officer, Joseph F. Inserro.

• Naperville: The Memorial Day parade committee has announced that members of VFW Post 3873, American Legion Post 43, and the Naperville Municipal Band will conduct Memorial Day observance activities Monday, May 31.

The day’s events will begin at 9 a.m. with a short parade that will start at the VFW Post and end at the dandelion fountain on Jackson Avenue. There will be a brief memorial ceremony at the dandelion fountain followed by additional ceremonies at many military memorials around Naperville including the Shanower Memorial, Naperville Cemetery, Veterans Park, SS Peter and Paul cemetery, and Burlington Square Park between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The day’s activities will culminate at noon with a memorial day observance ceremony at Central Park.

• Wheaton: Memorial ceremony and parade are canceled.

Kane County

• Aurora: The downtown parade is canceled.

• Aurora/Batavia: Members of the Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84 will visit four cemeteries to pay respects to the fallen veterans of our community. Times are: 8 a.m. at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, 675 Route 30, Aurora; 9 a.m. at Annunciation Cemetery, 1820 Church Road, Aurora; 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Cemetery on Route 25 at Mitchell Road in Aurora; and 10 a.m. at River Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, 1650 S. River Street, Batavia.

• Elgin: Memorial Day programs will be at Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 U.S. Route 20, 9:15 a.m.; Elgin Veterans Memorial Park, 274 N. Grove Avenue, 9:45 a.m.; Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Boulevard, 11 a.m..

• Geneva: American Legion Fox River Geneva Post 75 annual Memorial Day parade is canceled.

• Montgomery: Annual service will be conducted by VFW Post 7452 at 11 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery, 414 N. River Street. Complimentary lunch will follow at 121 N. River Street, Montgomery.

• St. Charles: The parade and service are canceled.

• The South Elgin Memorial Day ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. at the Panton Mill Park stage, 10 N. Water Street, South Elgin The South Elgin Police Department Honor Guard will be joined by the St. Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036 and Elgin American Legion Post 57 which will provide a three-volley salute.

Kendall County

• Oswego: Presented by the Oswego American Legion Post 675, the parade will step off at 10 a.m. from the former Traughber Junior High School at Franklin and Washington Streets and will proceed south on Main Street from the village’s downtown and conclude at the Oswego Township Cemetery on south Main Street where a memorial service will be held.

• Yorkville: Yorkville American Legion’s service will start at 11:30 a.m. at Town Square Park, 301 N Bridge Street. The ceremony will feature the reading of names printed on the Memorial in Yorkville Town Square, Music will be by the Yorkville Middle School Band. There will be several speakers.

Will County

• Bolingbrook: There will be a carnival over Memorial Day weekend at the Bolingbrook Village Hall, 375 W. Briarcliff Road, sponsored by the Bolingbrook Lions Club and the American Cancer Society. Hours are Friday, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Monday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.. Admission is free, however wristbands can be purchased for unlimited rides. Masks are required for attendees and social distancing will be enforced.
