The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) reached its conclusion Saturday, June 19 with its school-year athletic competition. The year was memorable as much for its lack of games, stymied by the COVID-19, as it was for the competition conducted. Nonetheless the IHSA performed an admirable service under difficult circumstances.
The final leg of Spring sports competition should have champions duly noticed. Perhaps most impressive was in baseball, a sport which easily can change results. Plainfield East, nearly halfway through the season was under .500, yet, defeated Lake Park, 6-5, Saturday, for Class 4A championship; In 3A, Springfield defeated Prairie Ridge of Crystal Lake, 8-7; in 1A, third place was won by Newark over Mt. Pulaski, 6-2;
• Girls softball: Lincoln-Way Central finished second to Chicago Marist in Class 4A and Huntley defeated Minooka, 4-3 in the third place game. Joliet Catholic Academy took second place in 2A.
• Girls track and field: Lincoln-Way East captured first place in 3A with Naperville North in third place, Downers Grove North, in sixth place, and West Aurora, in ninth place. Rosary of Aurora took third place in 2A.
• Boys tennis: Hinsdale Central took second place behind New Trier, Jacobs was fourth, and Naperville Central seventh. Central’s doubles team of Blake Roegnert and Daanyal Saeed was champion.
