The Northern Illinois University Huskies’ baseball team has been recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) for its success in the classroom the past academic year by being honored with the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award.

“It’s great to see our team continue to be recognized for their academic commitment,” said head coach Mike Kunigonis. “It is a testament to the character of these young men to succeed in very difficult COVID conditions.”

To qualify for the award, programs must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

The Huskies had 10 student-athletes named to the 2021 Academic All-Mid-American Conference baseball team. Senior catcher Jake Dunham (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) earned his third Academic All-MAC honor to go with his second team All-MAC selection for his play on the field this season. Kam Smith (Colonial Beach, Va./The Steward School) added an Academic All-MAC honor to his second team All-MAC and Rawlings/ABCA All-Midwest First Team selections.
