Continuing a series of community-service grants, Cosmopolitan Club of Aurora, the club that fights diabetes, presented a $1,000 grant to Cities in Schools (CIS) of Aurora.
Russ George, Cosmo president, presented a ceremonial check to Theresa Shoemaker, CIS executive director, at the Club’s Thursday, Sept. 16, meeting at Oak Street Restaurant in North Aurora.
CIS, a nonprofit, helps students succeed in school and life. Formerly called Communities in Schools, CIS provides school supplies, warm winter coats, school-day counseling services and after-school homework help, snacks, and enrichment activities at 28 schools.
Additionally, CIS helps elementary-school students learn how to control Type 1 diabetes. Aurora Cosmos provide sponsorships to American Diabetes Association-Chicagoland certified diabetes Summer camps. Due to COVID-19, the last two camps have been virtual for hundreds of area children.
Prior to COVID-19, Cosmos sponsored up to 10 campers annually at a cost of $400 to $800 per child, depending on age and type of camp. According to George, ADA-Chicagoland plans to reopen Summer camps in 2022 for a long waiting list of Type 1 diabetic children.
