Big, important, high school football games continue

The list of undefeated high school football teams dwindles each week. Following the games September 24-25, the list will be reduced by at least one, because Glenbard North will play at Batavia at 7:30 p.m. Friday and each team enters undefeated with a 4-0 record.

Nearly every game this season for Batavia has been a big game. “Glenbard North is a very tough and patient team,” Batavia head coach Dennis Piron said earlier in the week. “It will be a great high school game.” Leadership in the DuKane Conference is at stake.

Undefeated teams, in addition to Batavia and Glenbard North, include Oswego East, Neuqua Valley, South Elgin, Glenbard East, IC Catholic Prep, Joliet Catholic, Bolingbrook, Lockport, York, and Glenbard West. The Batavia passing game has improved which includes sophomore quarterback Ryan Boe and receiver Eric Newberry. “Tight end Joey Wells has been having a great year for us,” Piron said.

Marmion Academy Friday fell out the unbeaten ranks after letting the lead slip away against visiting St. Ignatius. “(It) was a very frustrating (20-16) loss,” Marmion head coach Dan Thorpe said. “We led 16-0 going into the fourth quarter and had two fumbles that led to scores. Marist (Friday’s opponent) is extremely well coached and has size and speed.”

West Aurora, 3-1, and Oswego East, 4-0, each won by forfeit Friday because of COVID-19. West Aurora head coach Nate Eimer’s concerns? “Oswego East’s QB is electric and (OLB) Jared Badie is a big-time D1 LB for a reason. We just need to put a hat on him.”
