“You are the people who help to move Aurora forward,” said mayor Irvin to the group of custodians who gathered for what they thought was an emergency staff meeting with the mayor. “I just want to let you know that we absolutely appreciate you and thank you for everything you do.”

Each employee was presented with a Mayor’s Award of Excellence and gift cards to local restaurants as other City administrators cheered for them.

The City celebrated a day earlier because the official recognition day falls on a weekend when City Hall is closed.

Celebrated each year October 2, National Custodial Workers Appreciation Day, is an annual celebration where people get together to pay tribute to and give their thanks to those men and women who work tirelessly to maintain the many buildings that are used for all kinds of reasons on a daily basis. The purpose is to show these maintenance workers that all they do is recognized and appreciated.
