Friends of Stephanie Kifowit Committee is holding a fundraiser to support Stephanie Kifowit, current representative of the 84th IL House district. Kifowit will turn 50 this month, and the committee will be host to a fundraiser from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the Capital Grille, 87 Yorktown Shopping Center, Lombard. Suggested individual donations are $50 a ticket, and sponsorships are available. Donations can be sent to Friends of Stephanie Kifowit, PO Box 1414, Aurora, IL 60507 or made online at StephanieKifowit.org.
Stephanie Kifowit will announce her intention to run for re-election in the newly drawn IL House 84th District at the event. Kifowit was first elected in 2012, and sworn into office in January 2013. She is currently the only female veteran in the General Assembly, having served on active duty in the US Marine Corps. During her tenure in the IL House, she has worked on helping Illinois veterans, especially to end Veteran suicide, in addition to passing legislation that helps children, seniors and the most vulnerable while advocating for a balanced budget.
Kifowit was the only Democrat to challenge former House speaker Michael Madigan for speaker of the IL House at a time when he was assumed to easily retain the speakership of the House. Her announcement was a catalyst that eventually saw a total of 19 IL House Democrats publicly denounce Madigan and lead to a significant leadership change for the Illinois House with the election of Illinois house speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch.
