State representative Stephanie Kifowit announced her re-election campaign for the Illinois House of Representatives Tuesday, Jan. 11. Kifowit will run in the new 84th Illinois House District.
“I have been honored to serve in the Illinois House representing the people of the great State of Illinois. I grew up in Illinois and after serving my country in the United States Marine Corps, I returned to Illinois to raise my family and to continue serving, first as an alderman with the city government of Aurora and now in the Illinois General Assembly”.
Kifowit was first elected in 2012, and sworn into office in January 2013. She is the only female veteran in the General Assembly, having served on active duty in the US Marine Corps. During her tenure in the Illinois House, she has worked on helping Illinois veterans, especially to end veteran suicide, in addition to passing legislation that helps children, seniors and the most vulnerable in our communities.
Kifowit was the only Democrat to challenge former House Speaker Michael Madigan for speaker of the Illinois House at a time when he was assumed to easily retain the speakership. Her announcement was a catalyst that eventually saw a total of 18 additional Illinois House Democrats publicly denounce Madigan and lead to a significant leadership change for the Illinois House with the historic election of Illinois house speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch.
“I am looking forward to continue to work on the issues that face the residents of Illinois. Already under the new leadership in Illinois, we are paying down our debt, passing balanced budgets, obtained the first credit upgrades in 20 years and our bills are being paid on time. There is more work yet to be done,” continued Kifowit said.
“In the next few years, I will continue to focus on lowering property taxes, increase funding for our schools and working to keep our neighborhoods safe while maintaining my high level of integrity, honesty, and ethics that residents can have faith in”.
