Dear editor;

It is an irony that former president Donald Trump finds himself facing a couple of district attorneys who are African American and that he is calling them “racists” just because of the color of their skin. He has said, “They are coming after you.”

It is the most troubling, especially the “they”, and especially now that the Republican Party has censured anyone in the party who dares speak out against him. It is becoming very clear that this white supremacist lie will be the underlying theme for many Republicans running for election in November.

The purpose is to instill fear in us (whites) in the suburbs, to fear that all those young ghetto Black men will come storming out here to kill our police, rape our women, and burn our houses down.

The United States never has been great from the viewpoint of people of color who have been taught over and over not to trust the system to be fair. How can America possibly become great if we keep nurturing fear and hatred of others? My grandma would say “Why can’t we all learn to get along?” Sowing seeds of more distrust is not what our country needs. Why can’t we embrace that old-fashioned value “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Only then will we rebuild a system that everyone can trust to be fair and equitable to all.
