Sports variety: Big time to small high schools special

We can have it all in sports, that is enjoy and dig deeply, or, lightly, and at all levels.

• At once, the University of Georgia wins its second consecutive top level college football national championship in stunning fashion, 65-7, against stunned TCU.

• Then, we have high school sports from the Little Ten Conference girls tournament starting Saturday, Jan. 14 which will include top-seeded teams, one through four at Hinckley-Big Rock: Newark, Serena, Hinckley-Big Rock, Somonauk-Leland Coop. The Boys Little Ten tournament will be January 30-February 3.

There is always special thoughts, feelings, and attitudes in any tournament play.

• We seek to keep an eye on professional games, even when our favorite teams offer disappointments.

• More high school basketball: Bobby Narang offers a special look at the game between undefeated boys basketball teams, Wheaton Warrenville South and Lake Park.

• Rivalry game Saturday, Jan. 7 was not disappointing in the visiting East Aurora boys’ close victory against host West Aurora, 82-80, and the West Aurora girls victory, 53-45.

• The day at West Aurora included the West Aurora Hall of Fame induction of three players, Mario Clark, Illinois High School Association all-state basketball in 1990; Tim Griffin, football linebacker and part of the 1978 West playoff team, and Matt McKee, three-year starter and star for the boys volleyball team. All three were top players in college, Clark at Chicago State, John A. Logan Community College, and Indiana State, Griffin at Northern Illinois University, and McKee at Pepperdine University on the West Coast.

• Honors at Serena High School Saturday, Jan. 14 will include Hall of Fame for the 1990 soccer team, player Meagan Krapausky, player Ryan Stafford, and Randy Goodbred, coach.

• A twist in college basketball is with Northwestern University (12-1 overall, 3-1, Big Ten Conference) with victories at Illinois, 73-60, January 4, and at Indiana, 84-83, January 8. Indiana, 1-3, Illinois, 1-3, and Minnesota, 0-4, were the bottom three teams in Conference.
