Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin will host his annual State of the City Address this week in a unique but ideal location.
With the theme ‘Aurora Ascending,’ Mayor Irvin will focus on how the City of Lights has taken things to new heights with unprecedented accomplishments this past year and preview exciting initiatives poised to take Aurora to the next level.
The backdrop of the sold-out event will be the Aurora Municipal Airport, where planes ascend daily, taking people and things to a higher level.

An integral part of Aurora’s expanding economic development plan, the renovation and expansion of the Aurora Airport will be part of Mayor Irvin’s address, which will also spotlight the City’s record-breaking year of a seemingly non-stop flurry of ribbon-cuttings, business developments, unprecedented housing growth with new and renovated units, increased public safety measures, and the generational impact of the historic agreement to move the Hollywood Casino from downtown Aurora to the I-88 expressway.
“What is happening now in Aurora was once unimaginable,” said Aurora Mayor Richard C. Irvin, who was born and raised in the city. “From buildings sitting vacant for decades now reopened and the long empty banks of the Fox River with multi-million dollar developments breaking ground this year to hundreds of thousands of visitors to our arts and cultural activities to thousands of residents participating and volunteering at community events throughout the year, things are at new heights in our city. Aurora is ascending, and the future is brighter than ever.”
Before the address, the event will feature a presentation of colors by the award-winning West Aurora High School Air Force ROTC, the singing of the National Anthem by Aurora’s Got Talent winner Kayla Tejero; a special performance by the St. Rita’s Third Grade Choir and their new song, Aurora Lived a Dream, and a proclamation presentation for International Women’s Day featuring women leaders at Aurora City Hall.
