Short strokes in limited space prevails: The 162-games season in Major League Baseball is a marathon. Can the White Sox and Cubs recover, improve, and be competitive in September? The positive look: Sox are only 12 games under .500 and the Cubs just one game under .500. The urge to surge should begin now, however. Pitching, defense, key hitting, and limited injuries are the keys.
- With the early-week matches the Cubs against the St. Louis Cardinals and the Sox against Kansas Royals, does anyone think Illinois vs. Missouri?
- High school track and field: Girls sectional meets May 11 and 12 with State meets in four classes, May 18-20, and boys sectional meets May 17-18 and State in four classes May 25-27.
- Although it is not supposed to do so, it is difficult to become excited with the Chicago Bears’ Spring mini-camp. Improvement likely will be intermittent, while the hubbub for many remains where the Bears may play in four years, Chicago, or, Arlington Heights.
- Can the Chicago (Geneva) Steel rally in the playoff series, after trailing Youngstown two games to one, and advance? The Wolves and Blackhawks did not qualify for the playoffs.
- Special sports events always will hold attractions, such as the Kentucky Derby, French Open tennis, and Memorial Day auto racing. State girls softball and boys baseball will end the high school season.
