Summer language immersion for students

Aurora University students have returned from a Summer Spanish-language immersion class that included living with resident families.

Aurora University Spanish professor Denise Hatcher led 16 advanced-level students to Salamanca, Spain, for the two-week immersion experience in May,

Students attended classes at Colegio Delibes in Salamanca. Classmates included students from Italy, France, Germany, and China.

According to Hatcher, “Our program included 36 hours of instruction with trained teachers who all live in Spain. Daily classes included two hours of grammar and two hours of conversation.

“After morning classes, students spent afternoons, evenings and weekends at cultural events and experiences such as cooking and dance lessons. “Additionally, students took part in excursions to museums, nearby cities, and historic sites.”

Natasha Ritsma, Schingoethe Center executive director, accompanied Hatcher.

  • Other travel Aurora University travel classes in May included students visits to Denmark, Germany, and the Czech Republic where they learned about European economic and financial systems. Caleb Lewis, associate professor of economics and finance, led the program.
  • For the first time, the Aurora University chorale performed and participated in a master class overseas. Lisa Fredenburgh, Aurora University director of choral activities, led the 41-member ensemble on a two-week concert tour of Ireland in May.
