The Chicago Cubs will be the topic at the Little White School Museum’s next “Meet the Author” presentation at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12 in Oswego. Author and Chicago sports historian Charles Billington will chat with visitors about his 2005 book, “Wrigley Field’s Last World Series: The Wartime Chicago Cubs and the Pennant of 1945.”
The Little White School Museum, 72 Polk Street, Jackson at Polk, is just two blocks from historic downtown Oswego. Admission is $5. for Oswegoland Park District residents and $8. for non-residents. Preregistration is available by calling 630-554-1010, and is strongly recommended for this popular program, but walk-ins are welcome.
Written a decade prior to the Cubs’ remarkable rise from decades to mediocrity to their victory in the 2016 World Series, Billington’s book shares the story of the Cubs’ historic 1945 baseball season in the “Friendly Confines” of historic Wrigley Field just as World War II drew to a close. Although the Cubs lost the 1945 Series to the Detroit Tigers, the seven-game series didn’t lack in drama. Billington will tell the entire story of that historic season, from Spring training until the last pitch in the Series’ seventh game, including the impact World War II had on professional baseball in general, and the Cubs in particular.
