And wrote in life as showing great intelligence
Amuses me. Most everyone in those days led
Their lives dependent on the use of common sense.
Moreover, putting the right word with the right phrase
Can be a learned trait, a trait gained more from thought
Than inspiration. Then, the art of writing plays
A most decisive role, and genius it is not.
It may be who and what you’ve read and learned the key
To composition. Then, competing in debate
Where quick response is necessary constantly,
Will always keep you on your toes, and carry weight.
I tried to do the best I could at every turn,
To be forthright and honest, even in defeat,
So, looking back, the accolades you say I earn
Tells me my life was both successful and complete.
