The Aurora Lions Club continues to make strides in serving the community with impactful events and initiatives. In January, the Club was host to Officer Grant Weil and Sadie, the latter the new bloodhound for the Aurora Police Department to showcase the importance of K-9 units in law enforcement.
Distinguished speakers Alex Alexandrou and Trevor Dick shared insights on municipal initiatives at a subsequent meeting.
The Club took part in the Aurora Public Library’s Early Learning Expo on January 6, screening children for vision issues. These screenings are held every third Saturday at the Aurora Public Library – West Branch, with January’s session on January 20. Detecting vision issues early ensures children receive timely care, supporting their eye health and academic development. January 31 five members pitched in to distribute pet food to more than 150 families. This ongoing effort stems from the Club’s decision last year to actively support and participate in the Pet Pantry events at Interfaith Food Pantry.
Looking ahead, the Club has an exciting lineup for February, including a quarterly evening meeting featuring Rick Gering of the Naperville Astronomical Association exploring the upcoming April 8 total eclipse. The meeting will begin with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. at the Aurora Country Club. Guest speaker Rick Gering of the Naperville Astronomical Association will explore the upcoming total eclipse of the sun April 8. The venue was chosen as one of the best places to stargaze in Aurora. Gering will bring a telescope for stargazing, weather permitting.
New members will be inducted. Additionally, the Club will welcome Jeff Cholewa, first vice governor from Lions District 1-J, accompanied by his Leader Dog in Training, Brandy, to highlight the organization’s dedication to supporting individuals with visual impairments.
The next Children’s Vision Screening event is set for Saturday, Feb. 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.. Parents are strongly encouraged to bring their children for this quick and free service. Our mission is simple: ensuring every child has the chance to see the world clearly.
Saturday, Feb. 24, the Club will extend its service to Hesed House, where members will prepare and serve lunch for all guests. It’s another opportunity for the Club to give back and make a positive impact in the community.
The first Aurora Lions Club women’s event, “Inspiring Women: Celebrating the Power of Female Leadership,” will be March 8 at the Aurora Country Club.
