Communication is important.
Listening is essential.
“The Voice newspaper in northern Illinois. How may I help you,” is a possible method of answering the business telephone.
That’s the way we answer the telephone, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays, our usual deadline days in the function of the newspaper based in Aurora, Ill. and in service of our Counties, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and Will (delineated in alphabetical order). We publish with the date of Thursday and mail the print edition each Wednesday afternoon and leave to delivery each Wednesday after rolling off the presses in the morning. We allow the USPS (Postal Service) to make the deliveries. We send by more than newspaper and go through electronics mans. There must be more than one way to communicate with our readers, potential readers, and even listeners.
This week we received more phone calls than usual, a dozen at least and an equal number of E-mail. They were primarily to complain in direct measure to the national television entrainment show, The Voice, musical variety. Because it is our deadline evenings, we do not watch the show, however, feedback makes us think we are involved. On occasion we let the calls go to an answering machine if time is of the essence. Some callers listen, many callers are fast to speak up, speak out, and have no interest in listening. It may provide a laugh. It may provide an interest in human nature.
•Newspapers have many other functions, including The Voice. We offer unusual functions such as the Northern Lights photos in the evening, Saturday, May 11, exposure for various service organizations which are dedicated to key social services, regional, national, even international and community news. We include government meetings. We offer community writers with important items, for example the opening of the first Bruster Real Ice Cream shop in Illinois, based in Aurora. We have an essence of sports facts on teams, schedules, an events. We make an effort to be well balanced and of interest to our community members.
