Batavia’s popular monthly noontime book program, Books Between Bites, will continue Thursday, Oct. 17, when we welcome mayor Jeff Schielke for his annual presentation.
The series will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Avenue. The public is invited to attend these free programs, presented September through May, on the third Thursday of the month (unless otherwise noted.) Reservations are not required.
Schielke will discuss a variety of Batavia-related literature, including highlights of a new book: “Batavia Water Utility History” by John Dillon, who recently retired as superintendent of Batavia’s water and sewer department. Schielke also will share an 1894 article on autumn in Batavia by Mary Conde Wilson, daughter of prominent Batavia citizen CB Conde, and a local writer in the 1890s.
We are pleased to announce that a special additional program has been added for noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025. Local author Marnie Mamminga and illustrator Mary C. Parks will introduce their second children’s book, “The Wolf Song in Me.” This follows their award-winning first book, “The Woodpecker’s Song,” in their Finding Wisdom in Nature Series, which they shared last April. As part of their presentation, Parks will provide a demonstration using the delightful torn paper collage technique she chose for illustrating this series.
The monthly program is hosted in the Founders Room, which is located on the main level of the Batavia Public Library. Parking is available in the lot just south and adjacent to the library.
People are invited to bring their lunch and eat as they enjoy the program and discussion. Lunch items, beverages and baked goods may be purchased at Flyleaf Bakery Cafe, located just inside the library and adjacent to the meeting room. Books Between Bites was established in Batavia in 1987 by the late Lee C. and Betty Moorehead. The program has been continued by their daughter, Becky Hoag, in partnership and co-sponsorship with the library.
