Poem: The Modern Grandmother

Beyond the biological dictates one knows,
There’s more to being grandma than one might suppose.
Just like each stage of life, she’s given ways to live,
Which comes down to precisely how she wants to give.
To give, most people think you first determine what,
Which well may be determined by just what you’ve got.
But indeed, there’s more—she must determine how;
And that may be determined by the here and now.
It all comes down to how she wants to be conceived,
And that means how she wants her tone to be believed.
That also means her temperament, what she displays;
Which may be governed how the circumstance then plays.
This will not be a show of personality,’
Unless she has determined that is what should be.
A modern grandmother, a mobile solid source–
A care-giver, a diplomat, a potent force.
She is more independent now than long before;
She can be who she wants to be, for any chore.
You want her on your side, you don’t want her to rue’
Ah, yes, the modern grandmother—may she be you.
