Before we had a stated Independence Day,
Most colonists had felt and lived it in a way.
Our war for Independence was our means to say
We would not let our Liberty be done away.
So then, once it was law, what did we strive to do?
What kind of path would we, a nation, then pursue?
Our history, sometimes chaotic, followed through—
The “Give me Liberty or death” was ever true!
Though freedom is not fragile, there is this, we find,
Through autocratic mind-sets, can be undermined.
That it demands a constant test of will helps bind
The future to remain the best of any kind!
So how you look at Independence , liberty,
Becomes a force within itself for all to see,
Which may be cataloged as simply you and me,
In keeping this America remaining free!
