As the days grow shorter and the winter chill settles in, there’s no better time to grab a warm drink, snuggle up with a good book, and join the Aurora Public Library District for one of our favorite annual traditions: the Winter Reading Adventure (WRA)! Launching December 1, this beloved program brings together readers of all ages for a season filled with creativity, reading, and plenty of opportunities to discover something new. Whether you’re a returning participant or joining us for the first time, this year’s WRA promises to be snow-tacular!
The Winter Reading Adventure has become a seasonal staple for so many families in our community. WRA offers fun activities that help brighten even the chilliest months. “We want our customers to remember five, 10, 15 years down the line, the memories they made with their friends and families while participating in WRA,” said library assistant, Linda. “Reading, of course, is a lifelong skill that we want to make fun and accessible to everyone who walks through our doors – and WRA is one of the many ways we try to achieve that goal.”
Elementary school services coordinator, Mariana agreed and added that WRA helps keep young minds sharp through winter break and gives adults a chance to stay inspired and mentally active. “It’s a valuable activity for all ages during the colder months,” she added.
Participation is simple! Starting December 1, readers can pick up a BINGO-style reading log at the library or sign up online. Each square on the BINGO log features a cozy or creative prompt, like Attend a library program, Read or listen to a book, and Ask a librarian for a book recommendation (one of Mariana’s favorites)! Teens and adults will find unique prompts too, like Read in a public place or Explore local adventures through Explore More Illinois. “I’m so glad we’re able to promote the hidden gem of a service that is Explore More Illinois.” added Linda. “One of my favorite offers is FREE admission, for four, to the Morton Arboretum – such a steal!” Color the completed activities on your BINGO log and when you get five in a row, you’ll win a prize! Complete all the activities on your BINGO log and be entered to win additional prizes! “Everyone loves the chance to win exciting prizes,” added Mariana. “It adds an extra layer of fun and motivation to keep reading!
Speaking of fun, mark your calendars for Friday, December 5, as our Winter Reading Adventure Kick-Off Party is one event you won’t want to miss! Join us at the Santori Library during First Friday as we celebrate the start of the season with live local music, hands-on crafts, a delicious snack, and two wickedly special guests: Glinda and Elphaba! We are thrilled to welcome families to this magical celebration, and we can’t wait to see the excitement on kids’ faces as they dive into the festivities. You’ll also be able to pick up your BINGO card or register online right on the spot.
Whether you’re hoping to brighten the winter months, discover your next favorite book, enjoy quality time with loved ones, or challenge yourself to complete an entire BINGO card, the Winter Reading Adventure has something for you! The program runs from Sunday, Dec. 1, until Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026. For more information, visit www.aurorapubliclibrary.org/wra or contact the library at 630-264-4117. It’s sure to be snow-much fun!
