Aurora’s Dominican Literacy Center needs women volunteer tutors.
DLC executive director Claire Wiesner-Smillie said, “Join our learning community at the Dominican Literacy Center in Aurora! The DLC is looking for women volunteers who seek to serve and support women students in the community through mentorship and English tutoring.
“The DLC trains volunteer tutors, providing leveled ESL curriculum and materials, as well as on-site support from staff. Women volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma. No prior teaching or foreign language knowledge is required.
“Weekly 90-minute, one-on-one tutoring sessions are held from September through May at 260 Vermont Ave. in Aurora. The next training session for new volunteers will be held at the DLC Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m..”
To volunteer, or for more information, call 630-898-4636, email paula@dominicanliteracycenter.org or use the contact form on the DLC website: dominicanliteracycenter.org.
Founded in 1993, the DLC is a ministry sponsored and guided by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield. Since its inception, more than 2,750 women have learned to read, write and speak English at the center.
Trained women volunteers help women learn English and help women and men prepare to pass their naturalization test and become U.S. citizens. Tutors select a weekly tutoring time which fits their schedules. About 150 women volunteer weekly to partner with women who wish to improve their English skills.
In 2023, the DLC received the Library of Congress Literacy Award, recognizing its high-quality programs and service to the community.
