Celebrating Super Bowl 60, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Aurora is collecting donations next weekend to benefit Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry in Aurora.

St. Mark’s pastor, the Rev. Krista Zimmerman, said her church is joining the national Souper Bowl of Caring, a movement to tackle hunger in local communities.

In the church’s lobby, soup kettles labeled with Super Bowl teams will be set up. In a friendly competition that will begin Saturday and continues Sunday (Feb. 7-8), congregants are asked to vote for their favorite team by dropping a cash or check donation in their team’s kettle. Donations will be forwarded to the pantry.

Founded in 1990, Souper Bowl Sunday is the signature event of Houston-based Tackle Hunger, a nonprofit inspiring people to tackle hunger in their local communities.

Since its formation, Tackle Hunger events have collected over $170 million and food donations benefiting thousands of soup kitchens, food banks, meal programs and other hunger-relief charities.

Tackle Hunger supporters include the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, facing off at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
