Building a stronger Library through staff development

Last Friday, the Aurora Public Library District was closed for Staff Development Day, an annual event where staff take the day to learn, connect, and have a little fun. With more than 160 employees working across three locations and a bookmobile, our staff bring a wide range of expertise to the organization. While we are fortunate to have so many people working in so many different spaces and departments, it makes it difficult to gather everyone in one place. Staff Development Day is the one opportunity for all employees to come together and learn from one another.

This year’s sessions were intentionally selected to inspire a growth mindset, a key component of APLD’s strategic plan. The day began with a presentation on ‘The Muppet Model of Teamwork’ from our keynote speakers Regina Townsend & Rosie Camargo. Using beloved characters as examples, we learned how valuing our uniqueness builds a more welcoming, creative, and supportive space. Next, we learned how statistics guide decisions about our collection, discussed ways to practice radical self care, examined how to create an inclusive environment for neurodiverse employees, and further developed our virtual customer service skills for interactions via phone, chat, text, or email. Learning opportunities like these make each Staff Development Day both informative and energizing for employees. “We’re spending the day together and getting to know coworkers we don’t normally interact with,” said Circulation manager, Carey. “We gain new knowledge, new perspectives, camaraderie, and a refreshed sense of library joy!”

While the day focuses on staff, the benefits of Staff Development Day extend throughout the community. “As a public library, our most critical resource for our community is our staff,” said deputy director, Tom. “If we can ensure that staff are supported, energized, and trained in skills relevant to their work, the community should be the direct beneficiary of excellent customer and library services.”

A highlight of the day was the announcement of the winner of the APLD Ruthmary Wood Award for Excellent Customer Service. The Ruthmary Wood Award (named after a former staff member) is presented each year to a staff member with exceptional internal and external customer service, nominated by staff. This year’s well-deserving recipient was Brian in the Digital Services department for his patience, professionalism, expertise and a genuine desire to help others succeed. “This year’s winner takes the time to help understand each customer’s needs and connect them with the resources and services that best support their goals,” said executive director Michaela in her announcement. If you see Brian during your next visit, be sure to tell him “Congratulations!”

By fostering growth, strengthening connections, and celebrating employee success, Staff Development Day helps ensure APLD remains a thriving organization, ready to serve Aurora today and far into the future. We thank you for your patience during the library’s closure, as it’s not just a training day; it’s an example of our commitment to serving you better.
