Members of the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley, recently toured HorsePower Therapeutic Riding, located at Honey Bridge Ranch, 6N917 IL Rt. 25, in St. Charles.
Diabetes Club member, Barb O’Neil, executive director, president and lead instructor, for HorsePower T/R, invited club members to view/inspect the recently completed reviewing platform used by parents to watch their children during therapeutic riding lessons.
The Diabetes Club of Fox Valley’s “Jerry Youngren Diabetic Support Fund”, made a donation to cover the cost of materials needed to build the platform, and provide sugar-free treats for their horses with Cushing Disease, which is similar to diabetes in humans.
We all met in HorsePower’s gathering room after the tour, learned about their successful summer season of lessons and several cancellations due to heat and smoke. How the hot days can be especially challenging for their students and volunteers who are diabetic. Three of their 21 horses are on pasture restrictions, because they struggle processing the sugar from the rich green grass, due to all the rain.
