In response to the tragedy at the Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., February 14 students across the country have engaged in various civic-led efforts, culminating in National School Walk-out events March 14. In efforts led by student organizers, seventh and eighth grade students at The Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove had the option to demonstrate in a Solidarity Walk on school grounds in support the efforts of these students nationwide.
“It’s wonderful to see such a sense of civic commitment being demonstrated by our students,” said Paul Druzinsky, ACS head of school. “We’re pleased they took the initiative to approach our school’s faculty and administration for guidance in how to demonstrate safely and responsibly.”
Instilling a sense of civic responsibility and engagement is an essential aspect of the ACS mission, and ACS is committed to providing these students with the proper tools and support for them to safely participate in a Solidarity Walk for the larger March 14 National event. The school’s goal is first and foremost to provide guidance to middle school student organizers while prioritizing the safety of all students and staff members.
“What’s most gratifying to see is how the idea of this Solidarity Walk came completely from our students,” said Anna Lenhardt, ACS middle school head. “This walk is a result of their drive and passion to make a difference and be part of something larger than themselves and ACS, and we applaud them for that.”
