Get ready for a grand afternoon, because the Aurora Public Library District is rolling out the welcome mat for grandparents, grand-friends, and their families! Sunday, Sept. 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Santori Library will host a Grandparents’ Day Celebration filled with crafts, Bingo, storytime, family portraits, and refreshments. It’s sure to be a grand time for the whole family!
This celebration is possible thanks to our grand community partners. “Non-profit senior service providers approached us to create a worthwhile event for families to learn about resources in the area,” says Event & Program Coordinator, Ali. “They proposed an intergenerational event to amplify their services in a fun and supportive way, and here we are!” Many resource fairs target independent seniors but miss the needs of multigenerational and income-dependent households due to challenges like transportation, timing, or childcare. By teaming up with the library, these organizations ensure resources reach families where they naturally gather.
Visitors can connect with representatives from Kane Senior Council, Jennings Terrace, Senior Services Associates, Sunnymere, Riverwalk Adult Day Services, the City of Aurora Senior and Disability Services team, and more. “At last year’s event, the majority of families had never heard of our organization and quickly realized that these services weren’t something they needed far in the future—they needed them now,” said Esther Allen, MSW, from Jennings Terrace. But it’s not all information booths. Families can also take home a professional, free digital family portrait from photographer Dr. Jean Hess, nibble on Grandma’s Cookies® while supplies last, and enjoy activities for every age and ability. We’ll have something for everyone to enjoy!
Of course, no Grandparents’ Day would be complete without some fun for the young ones and the young at heart. The highlight of the afternoon will be Groove & Giggles: A Grand Celebration at 2:30 p.m., a joyful storytime for children and their grand-friends. This half-hour blends music, crafts, Bingo, and plenty of giggles. “Participants can look forward to hearing a variety of music from different decades and trying out some fun activities together,” says Library Assistant, Hannah. “They’ll also get the opportunity to learn simple dance moves to go with the music!”
At the heart of it all is APLD’s mission to strengthen connections across generations. “It is important to offer multigenerational programs at the library to encourage community and learning between the age groups,” Hannah adds.
When it comes to this celebration and the people at its heart, “grand” really does say it all (hence it’s abundance in this article)! Grab the grandkids, round up your loved ones, and join us at the Santori Library Sunday, Sept. 7, where lifelong learning meets grand family fun (last one, we promise).
