Poem: A Human Commodity

The need for giving an excuse for something is a trait;
A trait we seem to latch onto as soon as we can speak.
And should you venture now to think of it, (with no debate),
You’ll make excuses for yourself, so be it strong or weak.

It’s also quite surprising at the range excuses have.
With many so innocuous and petty it’s a shame.
It’s also true, once given, it will never be a salve,
That lessens the impression it will often make when lame.

Excuses also are addictive, or at least can be;
You’ll have an excuse ready for most anything at all.
For instance, like this verse, I’m here to say “It wasn’t me!”
“It’s not for me to say this but…it’s someone else’s call!”
