There is good reason we celebrate Independence Day in the United States. It is less a focus on politics and more an understanding that the country took steps to break away from sovereign rule, England, and take its own course with a sense of independence. This year is 247 years following the 1776 Declaration of Independence. There was not unanimous consent to take a new direction. Many persons initially thought refinement of the colonies was the best course of action. Soon the tide of opinion began to move in the favor of independence. Perhaps, even in a true sense of destiny and understanding the colonies had been successful in the early years, in part because of self-reliance.
We are on our way to nearly one-quarter of a century as a nation, nearly an equal time since European explorers made entry to the continent. Most European and Middle East nations do have a history of more than 2,000 years. Today we in the United States are at a point in our world in which our residents hold discussions, include intrigue, proffer political posturing, and calculate changes. Many seek stability and fewer changes.
We still retain more than some semblance of a democracy for our future. We allow disagreement to exist and most of us see it as beneficial in the long run. Freedom has its price, however, self-reliance and self-determination are the hallmarks of a successful U.S. course these days.
Revealing, in contrast to our self-determination is in comparison to autocratic rule in Russia, which has been most revealing in the 23 years of Vladimir Putin’s relationship to his constituency.
Any autocratic tendencies in the U.S. should be overcome, in spite of any flaws and drawbacks in our society. We can always do better, however, we take as a country our sense of independence seriously and with an historical perspective.
Regarding a sense of freedom in a written perspective in The Voice, we encourage individual opinions, purposely refrain from what too many news organizations try do, especially cable news networks, and that is steer comments in certain directions. We have no official perspective. In recent weeks we have included a wide range of opinions and responses have been offering rebuttal and thoughtful discussions.
