Leona Di Amore, shares her life-changing experience with members of the Rotary Club of Aurora Monday at Two Brothers Roundhouse in Aurora. In May 2017, the Naperville doctor was visiting her daughter, a communications major for a girls weekend at the University of Texas in Austin. Kendrex White, then a 21-year-old biology major at the school, stabbed four male victims outside the campus main gym. Leona recalled students began screaming as the crisis erupted and she ran toward the screams and found a student, with a 10-inch stab wound. She said her experience as a Navy medic, chiropractor, and mother, kicked in. With no way to know if the scene was safe, she administered first aid to the student, applied pressure to the wound and kept the student calm and conscious when he started to lose feeling from blood loss. The student was hospitalized and recovered because of her quick thinking and life-saving skills. She expressed joy in being able to visit the student she saved. In 2018, she was honored at the American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois 16th Annual Heroes Breakfast. Jason Crane/The Voice
