Aurora’s Senior and Disability Services is teaming up with the Fire and Police Departments to launch a New Aging in Place Safety program. This new initiative that helps older adults and individuals with disabilities live more safely and independently in their homes.

The Aging in Place Safety Program registration is open and will run through October 31, or while supplies last.

This free program is open to Aurora residents who are at least 60 years old or living with a disability and who own their home. Approved participants will receive a 10-year smoke and carbon monoxide detector, a secure lock box with a key voucher, an emergency contact refrigerator magnet, home safety flyers, and personalized help creating an Aurora S.A.F.E. (Seniors and Accessibility Focused Emergency) Profile. Participants will also be entered into a drawing to win a PingCares safety smartwatch and a one-year subscription.

“Even something as simple as a lock box or a smoke detector can make a difference when seconds count,” said Aurora Fire chief David McCabe. “Especially for our seniors who deserve to feel safe—and respected—at home.”

The Aurora S.A.F.E. Profile is a confidential form that gives police, fire, and EMS personnel advance knowledge of things like medical conditions, mobility issues, or communication needs—helping them respond more effectively and compassionately.

“This is practical information that helps first responders act quickly and make informed decisions during emergencies,” said Aurora Police chief Matt Thomas. “It’s a proactive way to build trust and keep our most vulnerable residents safe.”

The program is also expanding to include Phase Two, a small home repairs initiative to address minor but important safety and accessibility improvements. An online survey is available now for residents who want to help guide that next phase.

The City also extends its sincere appreciation to the Home Depot – Orchard Road location for donating 200 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, discounting 200 secure lock boxes, and offering free key duplication for participating seniors.
