Are you tired of your traditional 9-to-5 job? Do you dream of being your own boss and charting your own course? If so, then the Aurora Public Library District’s new program series, ‘Alternative Pathways to Income’ is for you! Guided by local entrepreneur Tanya Vargas (TV) Stone of MizBizNiz, this series offers three introductory-level courses designed to help you navigate the exciting world of side hustles, gigs, and startups.

These programs stem from a growing demand for information on non-traditional work models. Whether you’re harboring a business idea or simply want to explore ways to supplement your income, this series will provide valuable insights. “As the Library’s Business and Career Services Librarian, I try to offer an assortment of business and entrepreneurial events at the library that come from different perspectives,” says Chris Biersdorf. “The Small Business Development Center and Women’s Business Development Center often come to the library for educational events, but I think it’s also good to have practicing entrepreneurs like TV at the library to provide information based on their own experience.”

This series will go beyond just the mechanics of entrepreneurship. One of the key takeaways is a deeper sense of self-awareness. By delving into the realities of business, you will gain a clearer understanding of whether this path aligns with your personal goals and lifestyle. “I’ve done several business and finance education events, and I’ve found that when people connect the information with their own personal experiences, they benefit the most,” adds Biersdorf. “Yes, attendees will learn about the various options for running a business and taking gig jobs, but most importantly, they will develop a better understanding whether these alternative pathways to income are right for them, personally. We can really help each other out when we share our stories!”

But the learning and self-exploration doesn’t stop there. APLD offers a wealth of resources to fuel your entrepreneurial fire. Our extensive collection of business books across all branches is a treasure trove of information. Additionally, APLD cardholders have access to a goldmine of online resources like LinkedIn Learning Library. This platform boasts thousands of video courses, including “Start a Side Hustle,” “The 45-Minute Business Plan,” and “32 Ways to Make Extra Money.” If you’re looking to connect with a community of like-minded individuals, then look no further than the Aurora Business United networking group. This group, open to anyone, meets on the second Friday of each month at the Santori Library from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. It’s a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, and build a network of valuable contacts. We also offer personal assistance through our Business Librarian service. Whether you need help using our vast resources or finding relevant organizations in the area, Chris our Business Librarian is just a phone call or appointment away (630-264-4117 or aurorapubliclibrary.org/business).

By attending these programs and utilizing our business resources, you’ll better understand whether a side hustle or startup aligns with your aspirations. The program series starts Wednesday, Sept. 4 with How to Run A Business at 6 p.m. followed by To Gig or Not To Gig Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. The last program, Intro to Starting a Business, will meet Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. All programs will be held in-person at the Santori Library and available virtually on Zoom. Registration is requested, but you do not have to attend the whole series. To register, please visit our website www.aurorapubliclibrary.org/events or contact the library at 630-264-4117.
