In honor of Black History Month, the Aurora Public Library District is excited to present an upcoming event featuring acclaimed author James McBride Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Santori Library, 101 S. River Street, Aurora, in Room 125/126. The virtual program will offer attendees an opportunity to hear McBride discuss his works, creative process, and the experiences that have shaped his storytelling.
James McBride is a versatile artist known for his contributions as an author, musician, and screenwriter. His memoir, The Color of Water, explores his experiences growing up as a biracial child of a Jewish mother and African American father, delving into themes of identity, race, and family. The book received widespread acclaim and became a bestseller. Two of his novels have been adapted for the screen: Miracle at St. Anna, directed by Spike Lee, became a movie in 2008, and The Good Lord Bird was made into a miniseries produced by and starring Ethan Hawke. In 2016, president Barack Obama awarded McBride the National Humanities Medal and in 2024 he became the latest recipient of the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction.
In addition to his literary achievements, McBride is a professional saxophonist and composer, having collaborated with artists like Anita Baker and Grover Washington Jr., and the PBS television character Barney (he was not the writer of Barney’s famous I Love You song but quips that he wishes he had been.) His career reflects a deep engagement with cultural and historical themes, often exploring race, religion, and identity with a blend of humor and insight. “The works of master storyteller James McBride reflect the library’s commitment to amplifying diverse voices and fostering community engagement through literature,” said event & program coordinator, Ali Lanthrum. “Our community is invited to enjoy the live discussion with McBride virtually or join our in-person watch party.”
Enjoy light refreshments as we watch the livestream together on the big screen at the APLD’s watch party. Our reader’s services coordinator, Becky Clark, will be host a post-event conversation with a chance to win a hardcover copy of McBride’s The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store (in-person attendees only, must be present to win). Registration is not required to attend the in-person watch party but is necessary if you’d like to view the virtual event from home.
Don’t miss this chance to engage with one of America’s most distinguished contemporary authors. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to McBride’s work, this event promises to be an enlightening and inspiring experience. An Evening with James McBride and accompanying watch party at Santori Library will be Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m..
