APLD seeking artists for permanent art installation

The Aurora Public Library District (APLD) is inviting local artists to be part of something extraordinary: the creation of a permanent art installation that will live at the heart of the Santori Library. This project, inspired by our Community Voices initiative, is more than just an artwork— it’s a chance to celebrate Aurora’s diversity, identity, and shared sense of community.

Since its launch in 2023, Community Voices has amplified the lived experiences of Aurorans through exhibits centered on Hispanic Heritage, LGBTQ+, South Asian Heritage, and African American Heritage. By partnering directly with community members, the initiative gives space to stories that might otherwise go unheard. “Community Voices does a wonderful job of highlighting the many diverse lives and perspectives of our community members,” said deputy director, Tom. “I love that the connection to community is inherent in the process of building and planning each exhibit.” While these exhibits have been temporary, our new planned installation will carry the mission further by creating a lasting tribute to Aurora’s spirit.

The idea to install a permanent art piece was born from combining two of our favorite things: community connection and art. “Our library is committed to serving and celebrating Aurora,” added Tom. “I think a permanent installation (inspired by the diversity of our community) really reflects that commitment.” Located on the Santori Library’s bustling second floor, the installation will greet visitors on their way to the Community History Room, computer lab, Spanish collection, and Teen Space, becoming a focal point of the library.

For the selected artist, it’s a chance to create something meaningful in a space that welcomes more than 284,000 visitors annually. By engaging with the Community Voices initiative and the people it celebrates, the artist will also gain a richer connection to Aurora itself. “The selected artist will become a vibrant part of their library’s history,” said event and program coordinator, Ali. “I am greatly looking forward to the variety of artists’ visions for this piece and how they reflect our vibrant community.”

Open to all local professional artists (with priority given to those from Aurora), the chosen artist will receive a $4,000 stipend to cover materials, labor, and installation. Each proposal must include examples of previous work, professional references, three to five concept sketches with descriptions, and an artist’s statement. “Each submission will be like a present we get to behold,” added Tom. “It’s such a thrilling process!”

When it is unveiled in spring 2026, the new installation will not only brighten the library’s walls but also serve as a daily reminder that every voice has a place here. The deadline for proposals is Friday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. For more information, artists should visit www.aurorapubliclibrary.org/bids. We look forward to creating a lasting symbol of connection and belonging that reflects the vibrant spirit of Aurora for generations to come.
