For the third time, the Aurora Aces Bean Bag Baseball Team has taken home the Jerry Hartenberger World Series Cup.
The Prisco Community Center was host site to the Bean Bag Baseball World Series Tuesday, Oct. 2. This tournament should not be dismissed. Those who need assistance walking can get assistance.
“The Greater Aurora Area Bean Bag Baseball League features athletes who compete year round for this day,” said Aurora Aces team member Paul Heinkel. There are eight teams in the tournament, the Aurora Aces of Senior Services Associates Inc., The Fox Knoll Trotters, Plum Landing, Jennings Terrace’s Jennings Squirrels, Constitution House Bombers teams one and two, the Asbury Gardens Rockets, and the Prisco Pitchers.
The team members compete in a variation of the bean bag toss/corn hole game. Their board features holes for foul ball, first base, second base, third base, outs and home run.
“Teams play year round once a month and celebrate with a World Series in October to coincide with the Major League Baseball World Series tournament,” Heinkel said.
“The game is played like regular baseball,” said Vanessa Rivera, activity aide at Asbury Gardens. “Three strikes and you are out. The players who hit the target advance to chairs to sit on the bases, and to indicate to their fellow team members where they are in the game. Everyone here is extremely focused. In some ways it is even more challenging for the scorekeeper than regular baseball. I enjoy watching them play and they love to do this,” Rivera said.
There is a lot of cheering, lots of applause, and a whole lot of determination in the faces of the competitors. Chuck Cornele, captain of the Aurora Aces has been on the team for three years. “I come back for the excitement, seeing the players and just the joy of playing!” he exclaimed.
