Waubonsie Valley High School student Brynn Drews, middle, receives the Mayor’s Award of Excellence at the Aurora City Council meeting Tuesday from Ward 8 alderman Patty Smith and mayor Richard Irvin. Drews recently received national recognition for paying it forward contest by Starbucks and the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Her mother submitted a video to Ellen’s Starbucks Rewards Surprise challenge with footage of her purchasing a drink for a customer while she was still under anesthesia from the removal of her wisdom teeth. She won $10,000 for the video.
Approved was a resolution authorizing the Ward 1 Business Grant Program 50/50 match up to $5,000.00 per project per year for any qualifying businesses for the purpose of upgrading or improving the exterior of their properties.
Approved was a resolution to approve the 2020 Fence Improvement Program and continue to provide assistance to the Ward 2 residents who apply and meet the revised 2018 guidelines.
Approved was a resolution authorizing the second year of a two-year grant in the amount of $27,500 per year in partnership with Rebuilding Together Aurora (RTA) and The Neighbor Project to assist qualified residents with projects in the Third Ward.
Approved was a resolution to approve the Ward 5 Residential and Nonprofit Grant Program.

Members of the League of Women Voters of Illinois receive honors at the Aurora City Council meeting Tuesday for the 100th anniversary of the group which was formed February 14, 1920. Mayor of Aurora, Richard Irvin is fifth from right. Among those Leagues in Illinois includes the Aurora Area chapter that was recognized July 25, 2019, and in turn is composed of 28 members. Mary Ann Vincent expresses her concern at the Aurora City Council meeting Tuesday of the nearly 20 registered sex offenders (RSOs) being forced to leave Wayside Cross Ministries. She said Wayside provides a proven program without any problems and now the RSOs will be on the street. Recently, the boundaries to McCarty Park were found to be within 500 feet of Wayside Cross, which is a violation. Jason Crane/The Voice
