Cosmopolitan Club of Aurora, the club that fights diabetes, celebrated its 95th anniversary during First Fridays events in downtown Aurora on June 3.
The event was at the Aurora Historical Society at its Pierce History Center.
Russ George, Cosmo president, opened the celebration with a welcome to attendees and a review of Club historical highlights.
Aurora Sixth Ward Alderman Michael Saville presented a proclamation from Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin who proclaimed June 3 as Aurora Cosmopolitan Club Day.
LaVonne Hawking of Aurora, Cosmopolitan International mid-states governor, read a proclamation and congratulation letter from Cosmopolitan International. Hawking added that congratulatory letters were received from American Diabetes Association, Ascension Mercy Center for Diabetic Wellness, Rush Copley Diabetes Educational Center and University of Chicago Medicine-Kovler Diabetes Research Center.
Mary Clark Ormond, Aurora Historical Society president, cited the Cosmos’ long relationship with the Society and praised club members for their fight against diabetes.
George closed the program with thanks to attendees and the Historical Society for use of its facility. Staff members assembled a display of Cosmo artifacts that will be on exhibit through June.
Refreshments were Cosmo Pops, fruit kabobs provided by Edible Arrangements.
George recalled that the Club was founded June 6, 1927, at the former Aurora Masonic Temple.
He said 65 civic-minded individuals held the club’s inaugural banquet to begin 95 years of community service to the Aurora area.
