Aurora Film Society is moving to a new, larger screening location this year. Starting this month, movies will be screened monthly at The Venue, a live music and performance space in downtown Aurora.
To celebrate, Aurora Film Society will kick off the 2025 season with a free screening Wednesday, Jan. 15. They’ll screen “The Crime Is Mine,” a 2023 French farce set in the 1930s. It is requested that patrons reserve their seat by visiting aurorafilmsociety.org, however reservations are not necessary to attend. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the film starting at 7 p.m..
After the inaugural, celebratory event, Aurora Film Society will screen films each month for members at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday at The Venue, located at 21 S. Broadway, Aurora.
Movies for 2025 include “The Long Good Friday,” “The Third Man,” “Paper Moon,” and others as voted on by last year’s members. Films were previously screened at Aurora Regional Fire Museum in their second floor theater.
Dan Jeremy Brooks, president of Aurora Film Society, said that the move to The Venue is a sign of the nonprofit’s growth. “It’s a bigger space, and it’s pretty well known,” he said. “In many ways it’s more fittingly cinematic,” he added. The Venue also has a bar which will be open.
Started in 2018, Aurora Film Society is subscriber-based, and annual memberships can be purchased for $60 on their website. With an annual subscription, members will receive a pass to view all of the monthly films for the year.
Patrons are invited to bring DVDs to Aurora Film Society’s movie swap held at the screenings. DVDs will be placed on a table for anyone to take. At the end of April, remaining movies will be sent to the BEAR Project on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
