The Aurora Fire Department is proud to participate in the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters” campaign, a nationwide tribute honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

From April 27 through May 4, all Aurora Fire Stations are illuminated in red in remembrance of the fallen—including Aurora Firefighter Recruit Cristian Medrano, who passed away during training in April 2024. In addition, the downtown area surrounding City Hall will feature red lighting and commemorative displays, including digital signage and kiosk graphics.

This annual display of red lighting is part of a national movement leading up to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, where communities, landmarks, and departments across the country light their buildings red in solidarity. More information about the national campaign can be found at firehero.org/light-the-night.

Locally, the Aurora Fire Department will host a memorial ceremony on Tuesday, May 6 at 9:00 a.m. at its Central Fire Station, 75 N. Broadway, to honor both line-of-duty and active-duty deaths. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and reflect on the lives and legacies of Aurora’s fallen firefighters.

“Cristian Medrano’s passing has reminded us how precious and courageous this calling truly is,” said Fire Chief Dave McCabe. “We encourage every Aurora resident to take part in honoring not only Cristian but all firefighters who gave their lives in service.”
